art düsseldorf 2022

8 - 10 April 2022

For the first time at Art Düsseldorf, max goelitz dialogically juxtaposes recent works by Niko Abramidis &NE, Brigitte Kowanz, Haroon Mirza & Mattia Bosco and Troika within a multi-media booth installation. The examination of scientific methods is characteristic to the works of Brigitte Kowanz and Troika, which engage with language, codes and algorithms through powerful aesthetic and conceptual perceptual phenomena. In contrast, the works of Niko Abramidis &NE and of Haroon Mirza & Mattia Bosco are characterized by the combination of technology and references from ancient cultures, which can be described as "archaeology of the future". Bringing these two artistic encounters together, the presentation opens up a multifaceted reflection on contemporary issues such as digitalization, climate politics, and capitalism.

    Niko Abramidis &NE

Niko Abramidis &NE (*1987 in Europe) opens up a diverse spectrum dealing with economic structures and visions of the future. Within his drawings, paintings, sculptures and room installations, Niko Abramidis &NEs develops parallel universes in which he creates fictitious corporate identities and appropriates forms of expression from financial economics. This also includes the play with words through signs, symbols and ciphers, via which he transfers his artistic ideas of myth and literary fiction. The artist develops a semiotics of archaic symbols paired with sketchy drawings, which he puts together using the latest technologies.

Niko Abramidis &NE studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Julian Rosefeldt and Markus Oehlen and at the Berlin University of the Arts with Byung-Chul Han. He is co-founder of the art space easy!upstream, which he artistically directed from 2015-2018. In 2018, he was awarded the prize ars viva for visual arts, which is awarded annually by the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e.V. This was followed by group exhibitions in 2019 at the Kunstmuseum Bern and at KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation in Düsseldorf. He also received an artist-in-residency grant on Fogo Island, Canada.

  • Brigitte Kowanz

    Brigitte Kowanz

The Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz (1957-2022) made light her primary artistic medium. She continuously examined its different qualities and manifestations via objects, installations, and spatial interventions using various illuminants. The medium of light is made tangible and treated as an independent phenomenon, material, and information carrier, as well as a metaphor for a search for new forms of representation of visible reality. Kowanz combines language—for instance political statements and news transmissions— with formal aesthetics, illustrating that light is not just a neutral vehicle for information, but plays a decisive role in shaping it.

Kowanz was awarded the Großer Österreichischder Staatspreis (Grand Austrian State Prize) in 2009 and exhibited at the Austrian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017). She has held a professorship at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1997-2021. Selected solo exhibitions have taken place in the Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich (2020), Taxispalais, Innsbruck (2011), and the Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig, Vienna (2010).

  • Haroon Mirza

    Haroon Mirza

The British-Pakistani artist Haroon Mirza (*1977 in London, UK) sees himself first and foremost as a composer: by creating unique instruments made of household electronic items, turntables, records, LEDs, furniture and assembling them with fragments of video footage, pop-culture references to create a distinct body of works that fuses light, sound and objects into a complex sensory experience. His installations ask viewers to reconsider the perceptual distinctions between noise, sound and music, and to question the categorization of cultural and artistic forms. The artist is particularly interested in the relationship between object and exhibition space, referring to Minimal Art in the process. In 2011 Mirza received the Silver Lion Award at the 54th Venice Biennale and in 2014 was awarded the Nam June Paik Art Center Prize. He has had solo exhibitions at the New Museum, New York (2012); Museum Tinguely, Basel, Switzerland (2015); and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2019), among others.

  • Troika

    Troika

Troika is a contemporary art group founded in 2003 by Eva Rucki (*1976, Germany), Conny Freyer (*1976, Germany), and Sebastien Noel (*1977, France). The artists live and work in London. With a particular interest in subjective and objective readings of reality and various relationships involving humans and technology, Troika examines how information is transmitted in the digital world and how it transitions into physical reality. Their works deal with different systems of representation and illustrate how technological progress and human reality influence each other.

Selected solo exhibitions have been presented at Espacio Arte Abierto in Mexico City (2021), Barbican Gallery in London (2019), NC Arte in Bogota (2015) und Daelim Museum in Seoul (2014). Troika’s cross-media works are part of the collections of the Center Pompidou, Paris; M+, Hong Kong; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Jumex Collection, Mexico City; and the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv. Troika realized three site-specific installations for the British Pavilion at World Exhibition 2010 Shanghai.
