The Hotel Mariandl / Cafe at Beethovenplatz in the Isarvorstadt district is known as a meeting point for artists. In this listed Belle Époque hotel, you won’t find flat-screen TVs, carpets, or an elevator. There isn’t even a traditional lobby; the reception also serves as the café’s bar. Once you've picked up a room key, you ascend the original, slightly worn oak stairs. Upstairs, you’ll find many antiques, over a hundred-year-old parquet floors, plenty of marble, stucco ceilings, and crystal chandeliers. Each room has its unique original interior, making every room different from the others—quite a contrast to modern hotels.
Since 2000, the now-legendary artist project Zimmer frei by the Cultural Department of Munich has taken place in these historic rooms every year. While the hotel continues its regular operations in the other floors, the first and second floors are brought to life with art. Not only the hotel rooms but also the staircase and other intriguing nooks are used for artistic displays. The participating artists are international, transforming the rooms with their installations, photographs, videos, paintings, and performances. This year, Ju Young Kim, Justin Urbach, and Maxine Weiss are among the participants in the exhibition.
