The retrospective of Brigitte Kowanz at the ALBERTINA explores the central question, What is light? to which the artist answers, Light is what you see – a statement that addresses the paradox of light, which makes the world visible yet remains invisible itself. In the exhibition, light is presented as a fleeting, immaterial phenomenon, with mirrored rooms and ultraviolet light creating infinite reflections. Featured are significant works from Kowanz's career since the 1980s, including the iconic pieces Morsealphabet and Email 02.08.1984 03.08.1984. The exhibition is on view from July 18 to November 9, 2025.
