Deva Schubert
Deva Schubert (*1991) is a choreographer and dancer with a focus on exploring the voice. At the intersection of dance and installation, her works deal with questions of intimacy, collectivity and the permeability of institutional and social structures. Mechanisms of vocal alienation, digital representation and the transitions between body, space and technology are at the center of her artistic practice. Her performances often develop from an examination with processes of transformation - whether in the form of acoustic distortions, the re-appropriation of marginalized practices or the investigation of fluid concepts of identity. Schubert is particularly interested in the moment of disruption, as a gesture of resistance and potential for new narratives. Another focus is on the leakage and disclosure of information, both in digital and physical form. Her works explore the boundaries between the private and the public, question normative orders and open up spaces for collective resonance.
Deva Schubert studied dance in Salzburg, Kassel, Copenhagen and at the HZT Berlin as well as fine arts at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. Her performances have been presented at Haus der Kunst Munich (2024), mumok Vienna (2024), Sophiensäle (2024) and Radialsystem (2022) in Berlin, Kunsthalle Zurich (2018), Uppsala Art Museum (2018) and the Transart Festival in Bolzano (2022). As a performer, she was part of international festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta 14 and Steirischer Herbst. Her piece “Glitch Choir” was awarded the ImPulsTanz - Young Choreographers' Award in 2024.
