The drawing The Calling schematic (2013) refers to the performance The Calling by Haroon Mirza, shown at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2013 as part of Nam June Paik Resounds. The artist brings together sound, light and objects into multi-layered, sensory experiences, challenging viewers to abandon their perceptual distinctions between noise, sound, and music. In doing so, he challenges the categorization of cultural and artistic expressions. He creates assemblages of various components such as found retro furniture, lamps, speakers, screens, and LEDs, which are assembled and activated in a DIY aesthetic. Mirza sees himself as a composer who allows different materials to become instruments that interact with each other in unusual ways, creating sound spaces that move between analog and digital, sound and image, sculpture and music.
